Hip and Joint Problems in Dogs

Hip and joint issues are unfortunately quite common in dogs of all breeds, sizes, and ages. Breeds which are more prone to joint troubles:

Joint and hip problems are, unfortunately, more prevalent with larger breeds of dogs since increased size and weight can put greater stress on joints. However, pets of all size may suffer from these conditions.

Factors such as having a higher Body Mass Index (BMI) or a longer torso may also put a dog at a greater risk of developing hip and joint conditions.

Common Conditions Dogs Experience:

Osteoarthritis:

Osteoarthritis is also known as degenerative joint disease (DJD). It occurs when the cartilage surrounding the joints is permanently deteriorated. It is caused by the natural wear and tears on the joints. Due to the nature of the condition, older dogs are often at higher risk to suffer from osteoarthritis.

Hip Dysplasia:

Hip dysplasia is unfortunately quite common in dogs. It is a skeletal condition where a dog’s hip socket is formed incorrectly. As a result, the bone does not properly fit in the socket, causing inflammation, irritation, and pain from the rubbing. This rubbing can wear the joint down significantly and lead to serious joint damage, even causing conditions such as arthritis.

Hip dysplasia is often times seen in German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Newfoundland, and Labrador Retrievers, though any dog breed can be afflicted. The condition is considered genetic, being passed down from parent to offspring. If you are purchasing a dog of a specific breed, especially those breeds which are prone to hip dysplasia, it is imperative to check with the breeder for parent health.

While hip dysplasia is considered genetic, factors such as insufficient levels of exercise and obesity can cause an earlier onset of the condition. Though hip dysplasia is more common in older dogs and often related to the aging process, it can actually be seen in dogs of all ages.

Symptoms of Joint Pain:

• Favoring one leg over another
• Limping
• Trouble lying down
• Trouble getting up from laying position
• Trouble going up the stairs
• Trouble jumping
• Swollen joints
• Moving slower
• Stiffness
• Bunny hopping while running
• Displaying difficulty engaging in common movements or activities
• Unwilling to walk
• Difficulty jumping into vehicle
• Obsessive licking of joint area
• Audible cracking or popping sound at joint
• Whining or whimpering
• Having accidents around the house
• Excessive panting
• Irritation or depression
